Quest for digitally-controlled analog switching

A major aspect of a couple of my projects is the ability to switch audio signals.  In theory (and with enough hardware), I could build an Nx1 audio switch with N inputs.  I’ve struggled with the whole “switch” part of it, until I found this:

Not for the faint of heart — but it discusses the use of the 4066 chip (of which I have at least 8 — w00t!) as an audio switch for guitar effects — wouldn’t take much of a stretch of the imagination to make the designs on this page fit my projects.
